JKA-Shotokan

JKA stands for the Japan Karate Association and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. In Japanese the organization is called Nihon Karate Kyōkai and was founded in May 1948 after the U.S. occupation authorities lifted the ban in Japan on practicing martial arts. The style of Shotokan karate practiced by JKA is commonly referred to as JKA-Shotokan.

In May 1958, JKA was officially recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education. The organization is also, as the only Shotokan school, a member of the Japan Karatedo Federation, the umbrella body that also includes JKF Gojukai, JKF Shito-kai, JKF Wado-kai, Renbukai and Nippon Karatedo Rengōkai.

The JKA World Federation administers JKA internationally and has spread JKA-Shotokan to more than 150 member countries. At the “Hombu Dojo,” the main dojo in Tokyo, numerous instructors—both Japanese and from abroad—receive further training each year.

As early as 1957, the first national championships, the All Japan Karate-do Championships, were held and have continued annually ever since. The event has even been attended by the Japanese Emperor. In addition to seniors, more than 2,000 youths (ages 6–18) who qualified regionally compete each year in the national JKA championships. Every other year, JKA organizes the world championships in JKA-Shotokan, which every other time—i.e., every four years—are held in Tokyo. In 2000, the tournament took place at the Budokan, Japan’s most prestigious competition arena, located in the northern part of the Imperial Palace gardens.
