SKK Kyokushin Karate
Kyokushinkai is the name of our style. Translated, “kyoku” means “ultimate”, “shin” means “truth” or “real”, and “kai” means “to unite” or “to join”. In essence, Kyokushinkai can be rendered as “the association of the ultimate truth”.
This has little to do with the Western notion of truth; it is more closely linked to bushidō (the warrior’s way or virtue—the samurai code of honor), meaning the discovery of one’s inner character (truth) under trial.
Kyokushin karate is grounded in self-improvement, discipline, and tough physical training. Sparring is often conducted under harsher conditions than in most other karate styles, and senior full-contact rules allow practitioners to test their abilities under more realistic circumstances.
One aim of training Kyokushin karate is to strengthen and refine character by challenging oneself through hard practice. Kyokushin has influenced many other styles; our full-contact rules are used by styles with roots in Kyokushin. Many of our competitors have also become champions under other rule sets, demonstrating exceptional strength and high fighting spirit.
Our organization, Swedish Karate Kyokushinkai, is affiliated with WKO (World Karate Organization), the world’s largest full-contact karate body with over 100 member countries. Since 2001 its president has been Kenji Midori, world champion at the 5th World Championship (1991). Worldwide, Kyokushin karate continues to grow in popularity as more people train with us, seeking both physical development and character building.
