Karate (空手) (kara “empty”, te “hand”) is a martial art within the Japanese budo tradition. Karate originates from Okinawa, south of Japan. Chinese kung fu brought to the island is part of karate’s roots, possibly combined with other indigenous fighting systems. Originally, “karate” was also written with a different character for “kara”.
The World Karate Federation (WKF) is the largest international sport-karate organization, with over 10 million members in 191 countries. Competitions are held in both kumite and kata for all age groups. The WKF Karate World Championships are held every two years, a tradition dating back to the first championship in Tokyo in 1970.
