Karate (空手) (Kara 'empty', tea 'hand') is a martial art that belongs to the Japanese budon. Karate originally comes from the island of Okinawa south of Japan. Kung-fu, brought to the island by the Chinese, is found in the roots of karate, possibly combined with other, already existing domestic martial arts. From the beginning, karate was also written with another kanji for "kara".
The World Karate Federation (WKF) is the largest international sports karate organization in the world, with over 10 million members in 191 countries. Competitions are held in both kumite and kata in all age groups. WKF's Karate World Championship, the world championship in karate, is held every two years, a tradition that has been going on since the first championship in Tokyo in 1970.
