Judo

Judo was founded in Tokyo in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, who created Kodokan Judo by systematising techniques from older jujutsu schools and adapting them for education, training and sport. Judo rests on two core principles: Seiryoku-Zenyo (maximum efficiency) and Jita-Kyoei (mutual welfare and benefit), shaping both technique and ethics on the tatami and beyond.

Over the decades, judo spread through schools, universities and public institutions in Japan and then worldwide. In 1951 the International Judo Federation (IJF) was founded and today governs the sport globally through continental unions and 200+ national federations.

Judo made its Olympic debut in Tokyo 1964 (men), returned permanently from Munich 1972, and women’s judo became a medal sport in Barcelona 1992. Since Tokyo 2020 a mixed team event has been part of the Games.

Competitive judo is decided by throws, holds and submissions. An ippon ends the contest immediately, while a waza-ari is a half-point; two waza-ari equal ippon. The IJF updates the rules regularly to define scoring criteria and prohibit unsafe situations.

Today the international season centres on the IJF World Tour (Grand Prix, Grand Slam, Masters) and the World Championships, with rankings leading to Olympic qualification. Whether you train for recreation, gradings or competition, Kano’s aim remains: develop body and mind and contribute to the common good.
