MMA gloves – training, sparring and competition

MMA gloves leave the fingers free for gripping, but padding and intended use vary between models. Choose gloves for the actual session.

Which design suits my training?

Grappling gloves prioritise mobility. MMA sparring gloves usually have more padding than light competition gloves. For dedicated stand-up sparring, your coach may recommend boxing gloves. Thin competition gloves are not the default choice for everyday sparring.

Size and fit

Measure your hand as instructed by the model's size chart, often around the knuckles without the thumb. Check whether measurements should include wraps. The glove should stay in place without rotating, pressing on the fingers or preventing you from opening your hand.

Oz describes weight and does not replace hand sizing or model approval. Competition requirements vary between amateur and professional rules and between organisations.

Materials and care

Assess stitching, padding and wrist support alongside the outer material. Leather is not automatically better than synthetic leather or microfibre. Wipe gloves down, open them and air-dry after training. Follow the care instructions and replace gloves with damaged seams or compressed padding.

Can one pair do everything?

Not always. Bag work, grappling and sparring have different requirements. Ask your coach and choose specifically approved equipment when competition rules require it.
