Martial arts shorts – movement and fit

Choose shorts for Muay Thai, MMA, no-gi or conditioning. They should stay in place while allowing free kicks, knee bends and hip movement.

Which designs are available?

Thai shorts often have wide legs and openings for high kicks. MMA and grappling fight shorts are designed for movement and contact. Vale Tudo and compression shorts fit close to the body. Check whether your club requires outer shorts and which designs your competition permits.

What should I check when trying them on?

Use the product's size chart and measure your waist as instructed. Try squats, high knee lifts and kicking movements. The waistband and drawstring should keep the shorts secure without digging in. Allow room for your usual protective equipment or base layers.

For grappling, avoid open pockets, zips and hard fittings that could catch or injure a partner. Ordinary gym shorts are therefore not always suitable.

Care and competition

Wash after training according to the label. Close hook-and-loop fastenings to protect other garments and avoid excessive heat unless the fabric permits it. Inspect seams and waistband.

Can MMA shorts be used for no-gi BJJ?

Often, but competitions may specify length, colour, material and details. Check the organiser's rules before buying competition shorts.
