Focus mitts and pads – choosing for both partners

Pads must suit both the person striking and the person holding them. Match the target area, padding and weight to your drills.

Which types are available?

Focus mitts are mainly used for punches, accuracy and combinations. Thai pads attach to the forearm and suit many punching, kneeing and kicking drills. Large kick shields provide a bigger kicking target. Kick paddles are often used for speed and accuracy, but cannot replace heavy pads for every exercise.

How do I choose the size?

The holder must be able to support and position the pad reliably. Handles and straps should stay secure without pinching. A large pad offers more target area but is often heavier; children and smaller holders need a manageable design.

Training safely and maintaining pads

Start with calm, agreed combinations and learn holding technique from a coach. Extra padding does not make uncontrolled strikes or poor positioning safe. Avoid loading the holder's joints at awkward angles.

Inspect seams, handles and padding before training. Wipe down and air-dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Replace pads with cracks, loose fastenings or heavily compressed padding. Both leather and synthetic materials can work well; construction matters just as much.

Are pads always sold in pairs?

No. Focus mitts and Thai pads may be sold in pairs, while shields and paddles may be sold individually. Check what is included before ordering.
