Punching bags – size, weight and installation

Choose a punching bag for your techniques, available space and installation options. The longest or heaviest bag is not automatically the right one.

Which length and weight suit me?

Bags around 80–120 cm are commonly used for punching. Kicking requires a larger target area; approximately 150–180 cm is common for low kicks. Hanging height affects which areas you can actually reach.

A lighter bag moves more and can suit speed and footwork. A heavier bag offers more resistance. Consider filling and impact feel too: a hard bag may be unsuitable regardless of its weight. The actual product specifications take priority over general ranges.

Hanging or freestanding?

A hanging bag requires a load-bearing fixing, suitable hardware and room to swing. Striking creates dynamic loads beyond the bag's own weight. Never attach a heavy bag solely to plasterboard or a suspended ceiling; seek qualified installation advice if unsure.

A freestanding model can work without a ceiling mount, but needs floor space and a correctly filled base. Only use filling materials permitted by the manufacturer.

Use and care

Use suitable gloves and wraps, start with controlled strikes and inspect the mounting, seams and filling regularly. Clean as instructed. Do not use an indoor model outdoors unless it is designed for that use.

Is a standard bag suitable for uppercuts?

Not always. Shape and access matter; an angled or dedicated uppercut bag may be more suitable.
